 Ibis Cycles began in 1981 with Scot Nicol building a bike in Mendocino, CA.  Others quickly caught on, and for 20 years, the motley crew called Ibis built some of the finest, most innovative bicycles on the planet. It started with Scot as a one-man show doing everything, and wound up an internationally respected company of many. They built road bikes, mountain bikes, cross bikes, tandems, rigid, suspended, titanium, aluminum, steel and carbon. After a bit of a hiatus, they're back and with the added likes of Hans Heim, Tom Morgan, and Roxy Lo, they're in better shape than ever!

In the beginning, Surly made frames, and they were good. Then they made parts. Those were good too. One day they offered a complete bike built around their Cross Check frame. It was good and lots of people bought one and rode it and told others. Surly grew strong like ox! One day they said “Hey Vern! What if we did us a nuther complete bike er two! Guh-huh!” And so they did. And here they are.
